Lightning Ridge — the only ground on earth that makes black opal

A couple of hundred square kilometres of New South Wales
Australia sat under an inland sea. It drained, the sediments dried, silica-rich water worked down through cracks and cavities in the sandstone and claystone, and over millions of years it settled into spheres small enough and regular enough to diffract visible light. Where those spheres stacked neatly you get play-of-color. Where they didn't, you get potch, which is most of it.
What makes Lightning Ridge different is the potch. There, the background material is dark — near-black in the best ground — and a dark background is what lets color sit up instead of washing out. That is the entire reason black opal is a Lightning Ridge phenomenon. It is geology, not marketing, and it is why nobody has ever found a serious black opal field anywhere else on earth.
The Ridge is a working town in north-western NSW: the Three Mile, the Four Mile, Coocoran, Sheepyard, Grawin, Glengarry. Miners sink shafts, follow levels, and mostly come up with nothing worth cutting. It is the least romantic industry attached to the most romantic stone.
Nobbies and seam opal
Lightning Ridge produces opal in two shapes and the difference matters to what you can buy. Nobbies are rounded nodules, opal all the way through, often with a dark potch skin and colour running through the body. Seam opal formed in flat cracks — a thin layer of colour sandwiched between host rock, sometimes only a millimetre or two thick.
Nobbies cut the best black stones, and it is not close. A nodule gives a cutter depth to work with: you can orient the stone to put the colour bar where it does the most work, dome the top properly, and still leave a solid stone. A thin seam gives you one flat plane and a decision — cut it thin and solid, or back it with something and sell a doublet.
That is worth understanding because it explains the entire doublet economy. Doublets exist because seam opal is real, plentiful, beautiful and too thin to stand alone. The material is honest. The listing sometimes isn't.
How the claim gets abused
"Lightning Ridge style." "Ridge-type." "Australian-style black opal." Every one of those phrases means the stone is not from Lightning Ridge, and they exist precisely because the real word carries a premium.
The bigger problem is treated material. Ethiopian opal takes smoke and sugar-acid treatment well — you can darken a pale hydrophane stone until it convincingly imitates a dark body tone. Sold as treated Ethiopian opal, that's a product. Sold as black opal, it's a lie with a photograph attached.
Honest labelling reads like a specification: solid natural black opal, body tone N3, Lightning Ridge NSW, 1.84ct, no treatment. If a listing gives you adjectives where those facts should be, the facts are missing for a reason. How to tell if an opal is real has the physical checks.
How I buy there, and what I ask
Some of my rough is bought at the fields in person, some comes from other Australian miners and traders I've dealt with for years. Either way I ask the same things: which field, nobby or seam, and has anything been done to it. Then I look at it wet and dry, under a point light and in daylight, because a stone that only performs under a shop spotlight will disappoint on a wrist.
I buy on risk. A parcel is priced on what it might hold and reveals what it does hold on the wheel, which is why the price of a finished piece has to carry the stones that didn't make it. I'd rather explain that than pretend cutting my own rough is a discount.
Every stone I sell names its field on the certificate because I know it. If I ever didn't know, it would say so.
