Before you buy
Asked before every purchase.
Common questions you may have before choosing your opal.
- Is this genuine opal?
Yes. Every opal we sell is natural, solid Australian opal: not a composite (doublet or triplet), not synthetic or lab-created, not treated, and not an imitation.
The stone is one whole piece of opal exactly as it came from the ground at Lightning Ridge, NSW or the boulder fields in Queensland. Each opal ships with a certificate stating its construction, origin, weight, and body tone.
- Will there be imperfections, or other minerals mixed in?
Often, yes, and that's normal. Natural opal forms alongside potch, sand, and trace minerals, so a solid stone can carry small marks from its own formation; a lab-grown one can't, because it was never in the ground.
Boulder opal is different again: its ironstone matrix stays on the back deliberately, stated plainly on the certificate, never hidden. Anything that could actually compromise a stone doesn't leave our bench in the first place.
- What's the best place to buy opal jewelry?
I’m obviously going to say “here”, so ignore that and use the test instead. A good opal seller states construction (solid, doublet or triplet), body tone on the N1–N9 scale, and the field the stone came from — in writing, before you ask. One who answers those three questions slowly, or in adjectives, is not a good opal seller. The checks are set out in how to tell if an opal is real.
What you get here that a marketplace can’t give you: the person who bought the rough and cut the stone answers your email, every piece is one of one, and the certificate says something specific. Start with the real opal collection if authenticity is the thing you’re weighing.
- Do you have an opal jewelry store I can visit?
Not yet. Opalani sells online only — there's no showroom, and pieces ship insured and tracked to US addresses.
That's a real trade-off with opal, because play-of-color photographs badly in both directions: some stones look better on a screen than in the hand, and the best ones look worse. Which is why returns run 30 days, no drama. Buy it, look at it in daylight, send it back if it isn't the one.
- How do I know what size to get?
Each ring lists its made size. Unfortunately we don't offer resizing at this time; resizing is available from most local jewelers.
Once a ring has been resized by anyone other than us, it can no longer be returned.
- What's your return policy?
30 days, no drama. If an opal isn't right, return it in original condition (unresized) for a full refund.
Return shipping is the customer's responsibility. Email us and we'll send return instructions.
- How does US shipping work?
We currently ship to addresses within the United States only. US shipping is free and every order ships fully insured, with tracking through the postal service and a signature required on delivery.
Please allow 2 business days for your order to be prepared; US delivery typically takes 5–9 business days after that. You'll get a confirmation email with your tracking number the moment it ships.
Need something sent to Australia? Email us and we'll arrange it directly.
