Solid Australian boulder, dark and black opal suit a men's ring best. Boulder opal still has the ironstone it formed in, which gives it an earthy look and makes it one of the toughest opals to wear every day. Dark and black opals are more understated, with color that shows as the hand moves.
What is boulder opal?
Boulder opal comes from western Queensland, from fields like Koroit, Winton and Quilpie. There, opal filled cracks in ironstone instead of forming in flat seams, so most stones are cut as free-form shapes that follow the color. No two are alike.
Its dark back is natural ironstone, the rock it formed in, not a glued-on backing like a doublet's. Ironstone running through the face, patches of potch (opal with no play-of-color) and fine sand lines are all normal. A crack that could open is a real flaw, and stones with one aren't used. Is it solid stone or inlay?
Many men's opal rings online are inlay: crushed opal or lab-created opal set into a channel in the band. That's fine when it's labeled as inlay. Every ring here is one solid stone in a setting made for it.
How do I know it's solid?
A solid opal is one natural stone all the way through. A doublet is a thin slice of opal glued to a dark backing, and a triplet adds a clear dome on top. Look at the stone from the side: a doublet or triplet shows a straight line where the layers are glued. More in how to tell if an opal is real.
Every piece here is solid Australian opal, with its construction and origin on a signed certificate. Australian opal formed in sedimentary rock and holds up well to everyday wear, which is why we don't sell Ethiopian or lab-created opal.
Which metal suits opal?
Sterling silver suits cooler colors like blue and green. Yellow gold suits warmer ones like red, orange and gold.
Opal is softer than most gems, about as hard as glass. Everyday contact won't hurt it, but a hard knock can chip it, so each setting is made to fit its stone and protect its edges.
What size are the rings?
Each ring is listed at the size it was made, so check the size before you buy. We don't resize opal rings. A local jeweler can resize one, but a ring that has been resized or altered elsewhere can't be returned.
What should I know when buying it as a gift?
Every piece comes with a signed certificate stating its construction and origin, and US shipping is free, tracked and insured.
